    Hi

I'm disappointed with wdtv capabilities. It simple lost sound and play slow-motion with good 1080p files (like Avatar). Is there some solution? This problem also occurs in wdtv v2?

    Thanks all for help

I've got a 1080p Avatar rip working perfectly. As you can see it's not the Blu-Ray rip, but it should work fine too.
    Here's the info:

if so, u have to compress the 1080p to 720p to play on your WD TV. DVD quality is also great.

I have the 34GB version of avatar, it is choppy on the wdtv but is perfect on the live.

my understanding is this version is just a direct audio / video copy from a blu-ray..

the live certainly has more horsepower than the original wdtv, this movie proved that.

If it worked fine on the Live, it should behave the same way on the Gen. 2 as well. I haven't tried very many 1080p rips on my Gen. 1, but the few I tried played back ok, as long as there wasn't too much video complexity/motion on screen, otherwise as noted above they got too choppy. 720p rips are excellent on the model though.

I've played full Blu-ray rips on my WDTV G1(45GB), so it's probably a bad encode or some weird stream the G1 can't handle.

@ToJa92: You're most probably right. I've found that a high reframe count messes with the playback and is not recommended. Unfortunately, seems some rippers don't know what they're doing, and the only way to reduce the count is to re-encode the entire thing. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Yeah, that's probably the failing link.. IIRC, MKV doesn't 'officially' support more than 6 reframe counts anyway, am I right?

I think so, and I remember reading somewhere that the 1st Gen. only supports up to 4 reframes.

    WDUser, I think it is 1080p 60hz and 5 Ref-Frames.

For 720p I think it goes all the way till 16 ref-frames.

    Cheers man!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Hey PDW, yeah, I think you're right about 1080p and 5 reframes. For 720p I couldn't find any info., so I'll take your word for it that 16 reframes are supported (though it seems like quite a large no. to me!)

BTW, I don't think WD has ever released detailed technical specs. about H.264 or other format playback limits, has it? (Actually, I might be shocked if they have! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) )

    query:
The WD-TV only has support upto 4 reframes. Large MKV files above 12 gigs are mostly coded 5 or 6 frames. Those files cant be played because they give very choppy and blockery image.

    answer:
The current product is not capable of supporting any more reference frames than it already supports.

Hm.. I've never noticed any problems even with HD files at 25Gb. Oh well, I guess I'm lucky (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Yeah, read this same link, which is why I had mentioned 4 reframes above.

Did you note how clever the answer is? Nowhere did they specify what the exact limit is, just that it supports X reframes and no more. They didn't even say whether the poster's mention of 4 is correct or not. Is it a bloody state secret, WD? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

yup, we don't know any more than before the query was posted...

WD seems to be very good at avoiding giving out many details about the actual internal workings of these things..

I'd guess you can look at the spec sheet for the video card/HD accelerator in the WDTV G1 instead, that would probably answer some questions (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)
Can't remember the model or manufacturer right now though.
