    Hello,

    I've loaded up a drive (iOmega 1 TB) and it plays pretty well. I wanted to access the WD TV Live Plus's USB drive from over the network, but I keep getting the error "Connection Failed" (this is on a Mac [10.6 -- Snow Leopard]). The USB drive is formatted as a non-journaled HFS+ drive.

    It's great the drive shows up, but it's not accessible. What's up?

    Suggestions?

    Thanks

    The USB drive is formatted as a non-journaled HFS+ drive.

    Try formatting the usb disk as NTFS. sure it shows up on the wdtv UI, but samba may not be agreeing with the HFS filesystem. at the very least try another disk that is NTFS.

    else verify that the wdtv itself has sharing enabled.. pretty sure there is a setting somewhere to enable/disable sharing of the usb disk.

    mine is in the other room and dont feel like getting up to check ;)

    Well, I was hoping to see something that would work as HFS+, as that's sort of a native file system around here :-)

    <facepalm>
    did you even try ntfs? does it work? is sharing enabled on the wdtv? are you evening using the correct method for reaching a samba share from a mac? (e.g. Go -> Connect to Server -> smb://some.ip.or.hostname/some.share)

    besides, what does it matter if this disk is ntfs or xfs or hfs or reiserfs???? not like you're booting your OS from the thing. its simple storage, just go with what works.

    try to understand, this thing uses a stripped down hacked version of linux to do its thing.. dependencies and libraries for every conceivable filesystem/feature/function are not necessarily built-in. if you want something that works with the apple (non)standard, buy something apple.
    </facepalm>

    obscure reiserfs info here...

    Your passion is commendable, and thank you for the information on the guts (implementation) of the WD system. Yes, I've heard about Reiser and followed it a few years ago when I installed a reiserfs on our Linux box. Too bad about Reiser, and rather sad.

    What's been forgotten in this discussion is the method for accessing the disk via the network through the WD TV gizmo -- that has nothing to do with what kind of file system that the attached device has. You are correct about the method for accessing it seems to require activating SMB on the Mac. Got that from some WD folk.

    Best regards

    Hi
    I need some assistance along the same line as this. I have been trying to set up my media player to get access to my laptop, I have a wired connection to the net but cannot seem to get my wd to link to my computer. My objective is to access files that are on my computer without the need of taking my external HD to the computer, copying the files to the drive and then returning it to the location of the media player. As you can tell I'm new to this and would appreciate any help to walk me through something that to most would seem a simple task. Help

    Great! For a start, what kind of computer are you using. PC/Windows, PC/Linux (or other *nix variant), or Mac? What is your network connection? Do you have a home router?

    I assume you're connecting the WD TV Live gizmo to your network, too? Are you setting it up so it's visible? Check to see if you can share the hard drive you've attached.

    I appreciate your time in replying unfortunitly I will have to address another problem first, my Lenovo T60 will now not power up, It was on last night and on my return it was indicating it was "off" with only the power and battery light on. All attempts to power it up failed with no success to get it to boot. Tried everything in my power to get it going but alas even removing the battery, HD,MEM card, and trying the reset methods I can find on the net will not get the blasted machine to come to life. I will get back to the Gizmo issue once I get the laptop happy again. I use the laptop for downloading and media stuff so I was trying to link it to the WD gizmo and in that way protect my HP Pavilion for my business . I'd be toast if I lost that one to a virus. It's times like this I feel my age and how technoogy can leave an old fart humble!! I'm from the era of wonderous discoveries like 8 tracks and Commadore 120's. Once I get some help on the Lenovo I will ask you again to walk me through the Gizmo issue. I do thank you for taking your time.

    I am going to try pulling the BIOS battery, someone told me that this will reset the MB when I put it back in?????, if after this effort it still fails to power up I will have to take it to one with more hands on savy than myself.

    if you leave the battery out long enough it may reset it but if it was working fine and then just quit, I can say with almost 100% certainty that isn't going to help you..
