Does the Live + send DTS 5.1 over the HDMI cable or stereo only like the Live does?
I have a Live and want a 2nd media streamer but really want one that will carry 5.1 over HDMI. |

According to WDC, an audio receiver is required for multi-channel surround sound digital output, but yes, it does support it over HDMI.
So does the WDTV Live, so I'm a little confused when you say it only does stereo. |

There are TV's that have optional wireless surround speakers and even pass through 5.1 such as my Vizio, so WD's not including it in the HDMI signal is a burden to their customers.
After posting here, I sent an email to WD support regarding this and their replay was "Unfortunately, you need a converter to get 5.1 Dolby Digital, or get a Digital Audio cable and use it along with the HDMI." |

The WDTV LIVE will output 5.1 / 7.1 audio over the HDMI cable. The Samsung PS50C550 TV will pass though the HDMI audio though the Toslink cable to a 5.1 / 7.1 amplifier and give you full 5.1 / 7.1 decoding depending on your amplifier. Be aware that the high definition audio bluray audio requires a special decoder. Depending on the DSP chip in the amplifier 5.1 audio can be decoded from a stereo analogue source ie DVD player etc.
Plug the HDMI cable from the WDTV Live box into the HDMI input on your TV. Feed the Toslink output from the TV into your amplifier's Toslink input. You should get pass through 5.1 sourround sound. Make sure that the Toslink is properly mapped. Refer to your amplifier's manual for the setup. |
