hello,
this time i have no clue about this. i feel like the side of the fan its too hot. i've tried to use something to lift it up a bit and it cooled down, so i'm guessing that the rubber feets are too small for the WD ? or the ventilation system does not work properly ? could this heat, builds up from the hdd ?? cos i turn off the WD and the hdd still spinning... any ideas ? / suggestions ? (sorry for my english) |

The Live does appreciably heat up as well, and it doesn't even have an HDD inside like this model. All I can say is, keep it in a well-ventilated place.
As for the HDD not turning off, I don't know if that's by design or just your unit. Maybe another Live Hub owner can confirm... |

Yes I can confirm that the HDD does not switch off, which I find somewhat strange on a media center device. The HDD should definately switch off if not accessed for a period of time and there should be settings to change timeouts, etc.

Not really. I've have several of these devices (Popcorn Hour, BoxOffice). They run Lunix. Unless the driver for power management has been installed and enabled (which the Popcorn forgot to do in the early releases of the firmware) the drive will keep spinning. Remember just because the device is off doesn't mean that someone in another room won't want to access it so the device is never really off. Only the display is off.

Ok, that makes good sense. It is nice to hear that other similar devices aren't necessarily any better.
However, looking at it from a pure customer point-of-view, it is becoming more and more of a requirement that products like media-server devices that has to be kept on all the time has an intelligent way of dealing with the tradeoff between power consumption/noise and functionality. In a media server the way to handle that intelligently would be to switch of the HDD when the server is not accessed. This device is intended to be placed in peoples living rooms so I would say that the issue would be of relatively high concern to the development team. I am aware that the firmware is relatively new for this device. I just hope that the development team is hopefully working hard to enable these features for the customers (which would include me) to make their product stand out compared to the other, similar products. |

WDLXTV for the Live and Live Plus includes the ability to power off the USB bus and thus any connected HDDs. But of course it seems that's too difficult for WD itself to do...
