       HDD not detected, no storage present

    hi!

    I've got "no storage present" message when connecting my Samsung 640GB external drive.
    I hve no problem with my passport 320GB.
    Samsung is NTFS formatted with quick format and it works fine with the PC.

    help pls!

    remove the power cord from the back of the wdtv, disconnect all drives, re-apply power, let it boot up and try connecting again.
    if still nothing, hook the drive up to your computer and do a scan disk to check for errors.

    tried everything and no result. could be "quick format" a reason?

    nope, that's how I format all my new drives.

    is there any wdtv compatible media on the drive? if there are just files on there it doesn't recognize it will ignore them too.

    I had some .mkv and .avi files on it. they worked fine on WD drive. should I try to copy the latest wdtv firmware on Samsung drive?

    I would run some checks on the drive to be sure it's okay. just because windows can read and see it fins doesn't mean the wdtv will.

    if you have the space to store whatever is on it, reformat it, can't hurt as your wdtv isn't reading it anyway..

    I found this forum a couple of days ago while I was searching for a fix to this problem. I have a Seagate 1.5TB external that would no longer be recognized by WDTV, but worked fine on my PC.

    What worked for me was to open My Computer, then right click on the drive and choose 'properties.' From there click on the 'tools' tab, and select 'check now' under the 'error checking' heading.

    Select the top option 'automatically fix file system errors'.

    When I did this, it found errors in the file structure or something like that, and rebuilt it.

    It worked fine after that.

    Hope this helps someone, as it was driving me crazy.

    I always make sure to eject the connected USB HDDs properly before I turn off my WD TV. Also remember to always safely remove the drive under Windows or any other OS and you shouldn't face any such issues again. Finally, if you ever face a sudden power loss while the drive is connected to your PC or the WD TV, be sure to check it as noted above just to make sure the file structure is alright.

    Hi,

    Did you manage to get this drive working? I have the exact same problem, my Samsung 640GB external drive isn't being recognized by my WDTV. It's NTFS formatted, have checked for disk errors, unplugged everything and tried again, but still not luck (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) ...all other external drives I've tried work fine though...sounds like this particular drive might be incompatible for some strange reason??

    is the drive USB powered or have it's own power supply?
    it may be taxing the wdtv to much if it's just USB powered.

    It's just USB powered...I read in another forum that apparently this drive works fine with the WDTV if it's FAT32 formatted, but obviously for anything over 4GB (which is what I want it for) it needs to be NTFS formatted. Works fine when connected to laptops / other PCs etc. too, so sounds like a problem at WD's end to me.

    As another user recently found out, a lot depends on your TV as well, i.e. whether it's sending enough power to the WD or not to power all connected drives. Frankly, for anything as large as 640GB, I'd prefer an externally (non-USB) powered HDD. Try it and see.

    As far as working if it's FAT32 and not if it's NTFS, that just makes no sense whatsoever. It's not as if accessing a FAT32 drive reduces the power requirements significantly (if at all) over NTFS.
