I have just bought the Mini and I am REALLY disappointed. I am very happy with my V1, bought a while ago, that supports almost any file format and displays gorgeous picture quality. I thought I'd be happy with the mini, which I set up in the bedroom, and i still haven't found any video file that will play properly. I have tried many formats, none of them will work correctly. I cannot fast forward or rewind, some movies will just stop playing after two minutes and start again, and when I'm asked if I want to resume movie from the last known position it just goes back to start. I am TIRED and ANGRY of trying to convert all my videos with so little success, even with Handbrake...
Unit has already been changed twice by the store where I bought it... same problems... What am I doing wrong? are there any "magical settings" I should use so the darn thing will play my .avi ? WD, you just lost a loyal customer. |

I doubt whether WD cares about losing a customer, or two, or hundred. I personally have stayed away from WD's newer offerings, and am overall happy with my Gen. 1, which I'll use till it dies on me. Will also buy other players, but not from WD.
As for the Mini, I'm really surprised anyone would bother to buy one, especially if they already own a Gen. 1. The Mini is a sad excuse for a digital media player. Even when it works fine, it is really under-powered and can't handle full HD video. Unless you really, really need Real Media support (and even then I'd recommend other players), there's no real use for a Mini. If you're ok with your Gen. 1, I suggest getting another, or you may want to try your luck with the newer models that are still receiving firmware updates (both from WD as well as the better hacked FW), such as the Live. If you're gonna keep it, you can try a hard reset (read manual for more). Also ensure your movies are not more than 720p, and check the manual for supported formats/codecs. Also check what FW version is installed, and if not the latest, you can try updating (see the FW section for the Mini on this forum). Don't forget to do a hard reset, then the FW update (try a bunch of different pen drives if one isn't detected), and finally another reset before using the player. Keep your fingers crossed and hopefully it'll work! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) |

Well, I have to say, it's only 29 Euros at the local electronics store, and plugged to an age old CRT television... but hey, I'm to blame for going cheap! Tried several codecs, will try a DVD .iso tonight, if it does work, well, guess I'll keep it for the kids, so they strop scratching all their DVDs...

Don't the movies that come as 480p 700MB DivX/Xvid AVIs with 128 kbps or so MP3 audio work fine? I'm pretty sure the Mini should be able to play these back at least with no major problems. AFAIK Handbrake doesn't create AVIs any longer (only H.264 MP4s), so try other programs such as AutoGK, SUPER etc., use these settings as a guide and see if it works. That way you'll save space (if that's a concern) as compared to VOBs/ISOs, though of course simple ripping of a DVD will save you time over encoding to AVI. Depends on what's more important to you.
