No audio via optical audio cable, Connected to dts capable receiver Options

I just purchased a live smb. trying to hook it up the same way as my old gen 1. I connect player to receiver via toslink and to tv via hdmi. I get no audio, and no indicator light on receiver. I have selected pass through optical only in settings. This is not transmitting any audio, dts or otherwise. I can get the audio if i connect player to receiver via hdmi, the receiver to tv via hdmi, but i don't like that because i like to plug my PS3 into that hdmi slot on receiver.
If this has already been addressed, sorry, tried looking but didn't find any answers specific to my issues.
Receiver is a little old too, LG, dts, dd pro logic II capable. Worked with old wd tv just fine.

Edit: well, i swapped the toslink, and that seemed to work, even though the old one is working on another Tv as i type. Oh well, got her going now, all that matters.
