    ......so is the problem with the WD-TV or receiver (Onkyo) ?

    Have you set audio output to digital instead of stereo? Are you having problems only with MP4s? How about MKVs, AVIs etc.? What audio codecs do the MP4s use? Run MediaInfo to check.

    P.S. If the MP4s have AAC audio, read this thread, among others.
