       Getting DTS to work without converting.

    I would just like to say hear guys i have very little experience in this and need all the help i can get so be as specific as you can please (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

    I have lots of MKV's with DTS audio and i have a WD HD media player 2nd gen as far as i'm aware and i want to be able to play the mkv's with dts(or anything else for that matter) without having to convert the bloody thing first.

    As far as i've read i need a toslink and a dts decoder with some speaker or in other words a surround sound with dts decoding. I just need to know if this surround sound would work with the media player and if it does exactly what to do please (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

    specs are there, it says it has a dts decoder and a few others as well as Digital Input 1 (Optical), i asume thats whats needed, any help what so ever is appriciated.

    Hi, If you have the Gen2 WDTV then you will be able to play DTS right out of the box. Does your WDTV say DTS on the top right corner? If it doesnt then you have the first gen WDTV. WDTV Live will also decode DTS right out of the box.

    then i have 1st edition, dts dont work anyway so it's obviously first edition. ummm so wd live decodes straight out the box?

    are there any known issues with mkv's? with this one video is fine jus audio wont play.

    Moving this to "AUDIO > WDTV 1st Generation"...

    To confirm which model you have, see the first link in my sig below.

    The 2nd Gen. WD TV and the Live can decode up to 2-channel DTS right out of the box, but for multi-channel DTS you will require a receiver. BTW, those Panasonic and Samsung systems sound like they'll do exactly what you want. You can connect them using a TOSLink (recommended) or an HDMI cable.

    MKVs in general work fine with the 1st Gen. WD TV. The audio issue of course may be due to DTS, or to multi-channel audio that the model can't handle. See the manual for details and run MediaInfo on your files to see what's inside them in terms of audio/video etc.

    well i got this one, actually it's coming tomorrow

    so all i do is plug the toslink into the media player and the other end into the reciever change a few settings and it should work? Anything else i might need to do?

    Yup, Toslink from WDTV to Amp that can decode DTS and you will get sound. Keep us informed with how you make out.

    I'm having same problem as hellblazer and will chime in regarding toslink. I've got WD TV connected to Denon AVR-1910 via HDMI for video and toslink for audio. Audio goes to the receiver and Denon reports audio as "DTS Neo:6", which as far as I can tell is indicative of receiving stereo input and upscaling it to DTS. It doesn't matter whether I connect toslink or keep only HDMI connected, in both cases the receiver reports the same flavor of DTS. The sound coming out of the receiver is certainly "surroundy", but i'm concerned whether I'm truly getting DTS soundtrack that was on original media or something else.

    With the Live, yes, but not that I know of with the 1st Gen. WD TV. All's fine here.

    For the DTS:undefined I use the MMG (MKVToolNix).

    Open the MKV, choose the Audio by clicking one time over it and then choose the language English for example.

    Remux the file and that is it. Next time, WDTV will show: Language: English (or the one you choose).

    I also usually force the MKV to be 16:9 always (even though sometimes it will deformed).

    I use to also put the SRT inside the MKV which prevents a lot of problems, specially with 1080p.

    And even though I keep the files, I love do this to all my movies. It is relaxing for me...

    My WDTV Gen1 plays flawlessly all AVI I throw at it.

    YES it works! this set up works. just need to make sure ur receiver has selected the optical/toslink and voila! display will show DTS and that sweet,sweet sound will come-a-blastin' thru your speakers. Happy New Year y'all!

    Ok so i'm connecting up my WDTV Live to my Denon 1910 as well. I'm using HDMI for movies and was thinking of Optical for audio.
    So that video and audio is sent for movies
    but when listening to music just want the Optical Toslink used is that possible? Or will the WDTV Live get confused as to whether to send via HDMI or Toslink? It is assingable?

    @roh008: How about connecting the player to your TV via HDMI for video, and to the Denon via TOSLink for audio?

    Will the optical allow PCM/DTS to be carried without downmixing? Ideally I bought the denon to do all the processing.

    It certainly should. I guess the Denon's display should let you know whether you're receiving downmixed stereo, or full 5.1 sound.

    i dont know if i understand clearly.

    its possible set up this device to play audio stream downmixed to stereo PCM if i play MKV with ac3 or DTS stream? i have only stereo amplifier and DAC. in menu is option STEREO/DIGITAL. if i set DIGITAL, then dts strem is pass trough optcal and i need receiver with ac3/dts decoder. and if i se STEREO? is stereo signal present on toslink?

    AFAIK, with DTS and the Gen. 1, you'll only get pass-through to receiver, not downmix to stereo.
