I have an entire folder of avi's where the sound is about 3-5 seconds behind the video. They're playing off a portable drive plugged directly into the wdtv live. I can play these on my laptop streaming over the network and they're just fine so it appears to be a wdtv live issue.

By the way, I had the same issue with mp4's (like many others) but after the latest firmware update I no longer have that problem and they're now in sync (even though the update wasn't for that issue.) but I'll take it!

Ideas on the avi issue? Thanks

Edit: It looks like I accidentally put this in the audio forum instead of the video. If a mod wants to move it??

I deleted the other topic instead, since this is primarily an audio issue, even though it occurs in video files. Similar posts are there in the Audio > WD TV 1st Gen. sub-forum too, so I went with that.

So does this happen with every AVI without fail? If you manage to locate an AVI that plays fine, we can look into it and maybe figure out what could be causing the issue.

Thanks for the response. All of my avi files play fine except this one folder of about 13 files. I originally just assumed it was the files but they play fine on my laptop.

Well, sounds like the player's fine then. Maybe there's something about those files that it specifically cannot handle. Can you run MediaInfo on one of the problem files and copy-paste the report here?

I'm not an encoding expert by any means, but these to me look to be the suspicious items:

    QUOTE (rosarch @ Apr 2 2010, 08:23 PM) *
    Video
    Codec ID : DIV3
    Codec ID/Hint : DivX 3 Low

    Audio
    Alignment : Split accross interleaves
Interleave, duration : 42 ms (1.00 video frame)
Interleave, preload duration : 500 ms

Re. the audio maybe the interleave/preload duration doesn't make any difference at all, but as for the video, I'm sure I've seen on this very forum people complain about DIV3 files before. Do the AVIs that don't lose sync use DIV3 too, and do they also have high interleave and preload durations?

This is from an authoritative site on codecs:

    QUOTE
DIV3 is a low motion codec (optimised for low motion source material). Several sources tell me that this is an old and illegal codec that should not be used to encode new material.

If indeed it's illegal, quite likely the player doesn't support it, and rightly so. So you might need to re-encode to a newer codec such as DivX 5/6 or Xvid. Unfortunately, every re-encode leads to quality loss, but depending on the existing source material and your encoding settings, the resultant files might not look all that different visually.

As for the exact encoding settings to be used, I highly recommend you post in a dedicated audio/video forum, such as videohelp.com

    Never heard that before :-)

My point is this that this (and hundreds of other files) play without issue on two other media players,I bought this player for a number of reasons one of them being the amount of files it supports.

Looks like I will be taking this back to the shop for another product that actualy works as described.

    :-(
