    Hi,
I'm using my WD TV Live on a 22" ViewSonic LCD monitor, using HDMI to DVI cable.
The problem is when I set the video resolution on WD TV Live settings it won't affect the resolution on the monitor! The resolution remains on 720x480 although in WD TV Live setting it says 1080p or 720p or whatever.
    What's the problem? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

P.S: I want to add that I use this monitor with PS3 and XBOX 360 on 1920x1080p with no problem, so whatever the problem is, it isn't related to my monitor.

Butt as I mentioned I use the same monitor with the same HDMI to DVI cable with my gaming consoles without any problems.
Besides my monitor doesn't have an HDMI port so I can't use HDMI cable. Although it supports HDCP over DVI. I have used it to Blu-Ray disc using my PS3.
Anyway I bought WD TV Live assuming I can use it on my monitor because I don't have an HDTV.

I have a first generation 19-inch flatscreen [in my bedroom] which says it's 1080i, but does not have an HDMI port so I'm using the component cables. The 1080i setting on the WD TV also does not work for me, but 720p works just fine. On 22-inches I can pretty much bet you you won't be able to tell one difference between 720p and 1080p wheras you certainly would on anything above 36-inches. The current Viewsonic 22-inch has HDMI and supports HDCP. You may want to check to see if your older Viewsonic model supports HDCP... from the HDMI FAQs:

    QUOTE
...consumers may want to confirm that the DVI interface supports High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), as content that requires HDCP copy protection will require that both the HDMI and DVI devices support HDCP to properly view the video content.

Whether it supports HDCP or not, I have a hunch that even though your PS3 and your XBOX may be set for 1080, your monitor is downsampling the video to whatever it understands (probably 720p). Other than that, I'll echo Drew here... you want to achieve true 1080p? A modern TV with a good 'ol HDMI-to-HDMI is the answer.

Thank you for clarification, but I have some things to add.
As I said even 720p or 720i won't change the resolution on my monitor, if it did I wouldn't have had any problem using 720p on my display settings. It's stock to 720x480 no matter what resolution I set for the device on WD TV Live settings!
And about my monitor, I should say it actually supports 1080p over DVI with HDCP because when I set the resolution on my PS3 or XBOX 360 on 1080p and I check Information on monitor's OSD it clearly says 1920x1080 and I can feel the difference on screen quality.
As I said even if I can get 720p resolution out of WD TV Live on my monitor it will be enough for me until I can get my hands on an HDTV with HDMI port.
You know, it's really annoying to spend 150$ on this device and not to be able to get at least a 720p resolution out of it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

the wdtv player is not a $300.00 or more gaming console, it's a hardware media player, period. a relatively cheap one at that, it doesn't understand the signals on the HDMI to DVI cable so it's downsampling to something that everything understands..

    Yessssssss (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
I found a way to solve the problem!
After searching all over the internet and finding nothing, I went to mess with the firmware files. I'm using the latest custom firmware (WDLXTV_Live_0.4.3.1). There's a file in the firmware package named "S00custom-options", I opened it and read the descriptions and I found section relating to forced-HDMI resolutions. There is a line there like this :"config_tool -c FORCEHDMI=ON". I just enabled this line and used this file on my WD TV Live, and bingo!
Everything is fine and now when I change the resolution it takes effect immediately.
I just wanted to let others know, it may help someone like me.
