I have some video files here (mp4, some mkv) that WDTV don't recognize.
What should I do to make it play them? Only using a program to convert mp4 to avi (xvid), for example? If yes, what program should I use? Because some of the videos is 720p and I don't want to lose quality. Thanks. |

Any re-encoding will cause quality loss. You can try re-muxing the MKVs using MKVMerge GUI (also see this topic), since this process is lossless and very quick. If that doesn't help, you might have to re-encode. Use something like RipBot264 to convert both the MP4s and MKVs to compatible files. Try to keep the codecs same (i.e. don't downgrade from H.264 to Xvid/DivX), but reduce the number of re-frames or bitrate or whatever you suspect might be tripping up the player (use MediaInfo on the source files to check first). Finally, try playing from a directly connected USB drive rather than over the network, since the latter may cause issues that might be mistaken for file problems.
