       Play mkv with header compression

    They need to come out with a firmware upgrade that allows the WDTV to read .mkv files with header compression enabled. It is so annoying having to use mkvtoolnix on the files.

    Come on WD lets step up to the plate here.
    (maybe a homebrew perrson will show them how its done.)

    as for WD following the modding crews lead, they have a pretty crappy record thus far but we can always hope.

    IIRC the latest Live beta FW versions do have header compression support. Don't know if the same has made it to the Live Plus betas yet. Maybe you can try the latest beta and confirm.

    Is this why some ov my mkv files play with a sound sync problem?

    @Eaglebiker: Newer FW versions have no problems with header compression. Back when that problem did exist, it was a case of no audio playback at all. Sync issues are an entirely different thing. Could be a bad encode, or the bitrate being too high...

    What bit rate is too high? Some of my mkv files play properly. But, I have a batch of files that have an issue with audio sync. The problem appears to be with the player since the files play without any problems on my computer. Any thoughts?

    We don't have any firm numbers regarding what bitrate's too high, or how many reframes are too many, or any such precise specs because WD hasn't deemed it fit to release them.

    Even if they conform to the specs, the files still could have subtle problems that a software player is more tolerant of and can gloss over, but a hardware player can't. You could try remuxing them with MKVMerge GUI, or last option even re-encode them. At the other end though if it's a FW issue, that's obviously something only WD can fix...
