Hi all,
I downloaded some new films this weekend and sat down last might thinking that I could spend a few hours watching them but when I click on the file the screen is just going black and doesn't do anything - has anyone experienced anything like this before? I can still view phots on it ok and play all of my music but the .mkv files that I could playback previously aren't working - this put a right downer on my evening as I just had top resort to watching them on my laptop. Anyone got any suggestions? I have even tried a factory reset on the wdtv and this didn't make any difference either - have the files maybe become corrupt in some way? I'm not using the "live" version of the wdtv -it's either the 1st or 2nd gen Cheers for any advice in advance! DT |

I deleted your post in the live section since you say here you don't have a live..
one post is enough, also you need to find out what hardware you do have so someone can try to help. |

I am experiencing this very same problem! I understand that it is due to header compression that became a default feature in the lastest editions of mkvmerge (software used to create the mkv's). There is a fix using mkvtoolnix apparently, but I haven't had time to try it.

@sam: You're most probably confusing your issue with Dale's. In his case, if the problem was with header compression, the screen wouldn't go blank; instead he'd only have no audio. You try the fix and discuss it in the appropriate topic here if you have any more issues.
@Dale: If you're still confused over whether you have a 1st or 2nd Gen. WD TV, you can use the first link in my sig below to confirm. As for your issue, do older MKVs that you know for sure worked, can you confirm that they have no video now as well? Also, which firmware version do you have installed (check the About screen under Settings)? How is the player connected to the TV? Do you have an external receiver as well? If so, how is that connected to the player? |

hi,
Have you encountered that some mkv files cannot be played on the WDTV v1.0? When you play the mkv file, it just hangs up and go to the karaoke mode. Would you know of any solution on this? thanks! I have a firmware 1.03.01. cheers |

Hi - i've also been experiencing the same issue as Dale. When i select an mkv file is just goes to a black screen and nothing happens. This even happens to films i could playback previoulsy. I have a G1 model with the latest firmware.
Looking at the links to the fix involving remuxing, it seems to be referring to an audio issue and not video. Are the 2 issues linked? i.e. is the audio issue also causing the black screen? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) |

Done a bit more research and think i've answered my own question - yes!
Anyone know how long it would tank to remux a 6GB file? |

Shouldn't take long. Remuxing is not the same as re-encoding, and should be very fast indeed.
