Hmm, are you sure the FW files aren't corrupted? Try re-downloading. Try both USB ports. Also try another flash drive, 'cos some just do not work.

connect the usb drive to your computer, delete the .wdtv folder, plug the usb back to the wdtv. worked for me. You don't need to delete the WDTV folder. The problem is that the space left in the HDD, Pendrive is not enough to cache the images. Try to remove 1 movie from the HDD for example. Message will go away. Got this message this week. Solved by removing one movie (4,3GB) from the HDD> Cheers. |

Regarding: WDTV 1st Generation >> "storage can not aggregate"
Solution: I was fortunate enough to have a 2nd level tech guy help me. I experienced the same messages you guys are having. He successfully guided me through to fix the error problems: ** On the WDTV > Do a "System Reset" ** On your external hard drive > Connect it to your PC Computer 1. Delete the .wd files (this will force the WDTV to create a new catalog for the movie files, rather than use the old one). 2. Then go to "My Computer" > Select your External Hard Drive > right click for "Properties" > Go to Tools 3. Choose "Check for errors" > Start. 4. Then choose "Defragment" > Defragment your external hard drive only. (This will help force the WDTV to create a new catalog for the movie files, rather than use the old one) ** Reconnect your external hard drive to the WDTV and let it scan. You should be in the clear and have everything operate smoothly. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

Okay, I am totally lost now.
Found the USB drive that I have always used with my WDTV (Gen 1) not working anymore a few days back (when I still had Firmware 1.02.07 or something). Here are the things I tryed so far: 1) Formatting the harddisk (both quick format and normal format, FAT and NTFS) 2) Running error checks 3) Defragmentating the harddrive 4) Safely removing it from the PC numerous times 5) Both upgrading (1.03 or something, the newest on the official WD site) and downgrading (to 1.02.10). 6) Hard reset (with the little button on the WDTV) 7) Soft reset (through the menus on the WDTV) 8) Tryed both USB ports on the WDTV, even tryed different USB cables 9) Tryed another USB storage device (which DOES work, it's only 1GB though, so no solution there) 10) Safely removing it from the WDTV numerous times 11) And I'm sure I still forgot some... And it still does NOT work. Sometimes it just scans endlessly ("Scanning the attached USB device) and sometimes it just says "Can not aggregate data". What the heck is happening? Ow yeah, the USB drive DOES work on my PC ofcourse and there is NO map made by the WDTV which there normally is (the library file or something). Help! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) |

@Vido: USB-powered on externally-powered HDD? If the former, try one of the latter variety and check if it behaves the same.

Thought of that yeah, but then again, this very same HDD (which is USB powered by the way) did still work a few months ago... So that can't (or shouldn't) be it. Don't have another HDD besides some USB sticks with little capacity to test either... Could buy another HDD and hope it works, but that has 2 disadvantages: 1) waste of money seeing as this one works perfectly on my PC and 2) don't know if another one WILL work...

USB powered drives are not recommended, yes they sort of work, sometimes, but overall cause way more problems than they cure....
the extra power draw by the drive seriously taxes the wdtv's power supply and in all likely hood is your problem.. buy an adapter that has USB power, get one of those dual USB cords, mini USB on one end, 2 USB on the other, plug the power one into the adapter, plug the power / data one into the wdtv. that 'should' work fine for you. |

Hmmm, will try that. But still wondering why it did work a few months ago without the additional power supply then :s
Do you think it will work if I plug both the USBs in the WDTV? So mini-USB in HDD on one side and the 2 USB on the other side of the cable (Y-cable) in the 2 USB ports in the WDTV... |

definitely worth a try, no guarantee though unfortunately.
I have read many posts that say the same thing, the USB powered drive used to work and now doesn't. makes me wonder if it's already done damage to the wdtv's internal power supply and if not, what exactly has happened.. |

I can tell you: even with external power, it still does NOT work. Bought me one of the fancy cables with mini-USB to 2x normal USB. Plugged the mini-USB into the HDD, one normal USB in the WDTV and the other USB in the PC (yes, a powered USB slot (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) ). Tryed switching the two normal USBs as well. Still the same stupid cannot aggregate.
VERY weird. Just made myself a new portable harddisk with a 2,5 inch SATA disk I still had. That one does work, even without external power... I guess I'm a very mysterious case (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) |

any solutions to this yet? I just bought some refurbed wd.tv's and insert a BONE DRY empty 16gb toshiba flash drives gets me the aggregate error.
I thought maybe it has to have something on it so I tossed a jpg and a avi onto it. no joy Reformatted fully not quick safely ejected. no joy. suggestions? will a small flash drive work? I just need to get my custom firmware installed but I have to be able to read a flash drive in order to do that. |

i tried everything on the toshiba usb...
i deleted all the files in it, did disk check, defragged, and formatted into ntfs. copied some video files (one avi and one mkv), tried it on. it did not say "can not aggregate", it DID see the folders and the files in it, but when i tried to play them it says the format of the files is not supported. i repeated all the steps above, except formatted it into fat32, the same... i have a 1tb external drive too. i tried to copy-paste from the usb drive to external drive, again, it says that there is no file in the drive. but when i try to play them it sees them as files but cannot play them. there definitely a compatibility problem of the device with some particular usb drives. hope WD can find a solution to this. i need a new 16gig usb since the only one that i can use at the moment is held together by duct tape! but i can not buy and try! it is a little too expensive of an experiment. i already tried my luck with the 8gig kingston mini usb that i mentioned in my previous post, it does not work so i am reluctant to buy another one without knowing that it will certainly work this time (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) |

@enuff: Instead of simply reformatting, can you delete all existing partitions on the drive, then create one single partition from the entire free space, format that as NTFS and check? If that doesn't help, then yes, maybe it's a compatibility issue with the player after all.

I do not understand what you mean by "delete all existing partitions on the drive"?
I have 16gb usb flash drive which has no partitions? I do not make partitions on a 16gb flash drive because I might need to transfer files too big that they won't fit into partitions in the usb drive. As a matter of fact, I never even thought about creating partitions in a usb flash drive. |

It has a single partition by default. Check if Windows Disk Management (Start > Run > diskmgmt.msc) can delete the existing partition and recreate it, else you can use a utility like this one.

any solutions to this yet? I just bought some refurbed wd.tv's and insert a BONE DRY empty 16gb toshiba flash drives gets me the aggregate error. Nobody read my post above??? Really??? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) The aggregate warning message is because there is not enought space for WDTV to work. Just clean a bit. In my case, less then 400MB prompts the message everytime. I just go back and delete 1 movie and it stops right away. I don't do anything else besides provide a bit more space. ~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~* Another topic brought it here. No, using USB power has no issue to the WDTV. USB 2.0 provides only 500ma anyways, using a powered or non-powered HDD. No, it won't work plugging both USB cables. Your HDD needs 500ma, and the Y cable is only used for USB 1.1 or below because it can't provide 500ma, so using 2 cables can workaround that. Now for a USB 2.0, what the case will do, it will just ignore the other 500ma you are provinding it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) If you are having problems with external case it is probably the cable or the case (in my previous problem was my case, just replacing for a new one from the same brand fixed my issue). (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) Cheers. |
