fast forward issues with mkv? Options

I have a few movies in mkv and all look and play beautifully but any time I try to fast forward , the video kinda shudders and puts me back at the beginning of the movie! anyone else experience this and or have any tips?

what firmware version are you using?

I had one of the betas do that to me, the newest version doesn't do it to me though.

cool i have the beta 1.02.07 I think, I havnt updated to the official release yet, but will do so now!

update: apparently already having the beta of the current official firmware installed, the wdtv does not recognize the official firmware as an upgrade on my thumbdrive, so I think I will have to wait till the next release!

The beta and the official .07 release are identical, so it wont make a difference. You might also want to try a different drive, that might be a part of the problem.

thanks for the tip neverlift, I think I will end up just doing all my encoding to xvid avi files, seeing they have no playback issues for me! I will try another drive and see if that works out but I cant replace my current drive! I just bought it to use with wdtv! lol and already have hundreds of gigs of tv shows and movies on it.

Had the same problem. I solved it by fixing the MKV file.
What I simply did was reconstruct the MKV file.
Since I use Linux, I used the following command: mkvmerge -o new_pt1.mkv pt1.mkv
This just generates a new MKV file; It doesn't re-encode anything, so it takes only a few seconds (depending on the movie size).

Hey I usually rebuild the MKV file and also force it to be shown in 16:9 or 1.85:1. This way will take up the whole screen, even if the movie some times looks stretched.

I have no more issues with audio and video synch.

I also use this to embeed the portuguese (in my case) subtitles in the mkv files. So the WDTV has less files to handle it.

My entire MKV collection cannot be Fast Forwarded or rewound without throwing me back to the start of the movie. I tried the latest firmware with no luck.

Anyone got a solution for Windows users?

I never had a problem with Fast Foward. Try to recreate the MKV. It may be the way you created the container.

I realize this thread is very old, but just figured it might help some people in the future:

Remux the MKV file. That will fix this issue. I had the same problem with all the MKVs i ripped from handbrake, but remuxing them did the trick.

I use a mac and the only free mac MKV editor i could find was MKVToolnix. I know there are a bunch for PC.

Remuxing is definitely the way to go, since re-encoding will always lead to quality loss and take hours, whereas remuxing will only take a few seconds at most. BTW, mkvmerge GUI (part of the mkvtoolnix package) is available as a Windows version too. (That's for campbellmack who ought to have found the Windows version easily if he'd just searched.)

@campbellmack: I was just pointing out to tomnehek that his post was somewhat redundant. As a mod, I felt it was better to tell him instead of simply deleting his post. Also, you clearly never bothered to search for mkvmerge acc. to Pjotr's suggestion before posting here looking for a Windows solution. No further posts here either re. whether you managed to finally solve your problems or not using mkvmerge. So unhelpful? Well who's to know unless the person with the problem posts back stating whether a suggested solution worked for him or not? Obviously though, seems you're still searching for a solution and it's ironic really that a Google search brought you back here instead of you returning by yourself with updates and asking for further suggestions.
