if youre logging in with a gmail account - itll crash (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

log in with your normal YouTube account and it should work fine - hope this helps!

I'm one of the lucky ones who's WDTV Live survived the latest firmware update. So I'm running 1.01.12 and all seems well until I try to play a YouTube video.

I log in ok to YouTube, can see the movie thumb, search is good but when I try to play a video I get an error message that tells me the video can't be played and that my WDTV Live needs a firmware upgrade to play them.

What is up with that?? I'm running the latest firmware. It also worked fine using the old firmware.

I see by looking through the threads that some have experienced crashing when trying to play them but mine isn't crashing.

Anyone else seeing this behavior? I'm sure the programmers at WD are busy cleaning up the fallout from the last firmware fiasco but I would hope they get on this soon. It is a highly advertised "feature" of the WDTV Live. Printed right on the box.

    Thanks!

I tried mine again the other night and it was fine. Maybe try changing your password through the youtube webpage? Mine is 8 characters long and only has lowercase letters...you could try making it simpler and 8 characters to see if it's something goofy like that.

Mine was working fine for a while, and now crashes upon login. It logs in and briefly brings up the thumbnails (black) of my videos, and then crashes after about two seconds. The only thing I notice that's different is on the WDTVL page where you login to YouTube is that my login name appears but no longer has a little dot next to it. Whether I try to log in using that listing or from scratch my WDTVL system reboots. And I'm using my YouTube-specific login, not Google/g-mail.

I am having the exact same issue. Running the latest firmware from before the brickware. Direct ethernet link. Youtube account is not a gmail account.

Its pretty annoying since this was a major selling point for me. I want to be able to access my subscriptions from the couch. I hope someone addresses this quickly.

I have the same problem: after login into Youtube (normal account) the WDTV live reboots immediately. Using the current firmware, also tried with a simplified pwd.

For me the Youtube plugin was THE reason to buy the product - this indeed is annoying. Especially as I need to realize I'm not the only user with that problem...

Same thing here. I just noticed my unit crashes whenever I start the Youtube app.

I have the feeling that this was expected and not a new screw up from WD (I survived the .12 firmware nonsense by chance!). I remember that shortly before the .12 firmware incident I saw in the news that Youtube was pulling the API to access the HD content:

    http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/20/youtube...opcorn-hour-ot/

December 2nd was the deadline. At the time I thought when will WDTV's time to be affected by this. And then when the firmware upgrade happened my first thought was that they were pushing this otherwise last-minute-and-rather-featureless upgrade to comply to Youtube's licensing scheme. If you think about it, the upgrade itself didn't make any sense "firmware upgrade to improve the firmware upgrade procedure"? That sounds like a catch-22 to me. Besides, why the emergency? If the upgrading procedure was at fault, it didn't warrant an "urgent" upgrade, because it was going to fail anyway if it was really serious. Better wait until you can push it with other actual features. I work in the software industry and that's just the way it is.

Anyways, I'm sounding very conspiracy theory now, I know, but I can't help but think that these two things are connected. That the .12 firmware was WD's failed attempt to keep the access to the API up and that now we are just seeing the result of Google pulling the plug on us.

Whatever it is, I no longer have access to Youtube. For the record, I still have the .11 firmware in my WDTV Live.

I have the same problem, and I was able to update to .12 firmware successfully. I think the update really was a 'fix' for the updater itself, which was trying to fix an existing issue that only affected a few people (but since the 'fix' updates the updater itself, the update affected more people than the population it was intended for). Unfortunately, the firmware version has nothing to do with the youtube login problem. I was hoping that a 'downgrade' will resolve the issue, but no, it sounds like it will not. I personally don't care much about HD, if the issue deals with the API handling of HD content, I rather have my WDTV Live default to SD to make this feature work.

    I had the same problem.
Recently bought a box. Failed to login into my youtube account (the box either restarted or shown everything like favorites, playlist empty).
Linked the youtube account to my google account (http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=69964)
After that - no problem - logged in with the google username/password (didn't tried the youtube username after linking)
Also, don't know if it was relevant, changed my password to have more than 8 characters before linking.
I upgraded to the latest as of Dec, 27 firmware (something...11)

    Hope, this helps, cheers

Yes, this is the fix that works!! The way this is done is to (on your computer) log out of your existing youtube account and the choose create new account. During this proces you will be asked if you already have a google account, choose this, next you will be asked if you have a youtube account you wish to combine with your google login. For some reason it will ask you to login again to confirm. Do this with your google login(eventhough you have just input your youtube, and "do it again" will make you(me) think that it wants you to repeat the youtube log in). This is how I made the combining of the two - now my WDTV Live rocks again! The favourites work flawlessly, haven't tried playlists.

Have fun, and thank you VVV - #14

What are you talking about? Creating a new youtube account and using that for the WDTV, or do you somehow use the create new account link but not create a new account? I am having the same problem as everyone else here, this is very frustrating.

Logging in to YouTube on WDTVL using my Google account works, but not my direct YouTube account. It's very strange, but at least I know how to make it work.

Yes, same problem here. I can log in but as soon as I access my playlists.... crash, WD TV powers down and reboots! It does it every single time. If I don't log in and just access top favorited vids, then those play ok.

Hope there's fix for this soon - it used to work just fine with older firmware, so it's definitely a bug introduced recently or perhaps youtube changed something on their site.

My current firmware version is 1.01.12
