Hi,
I have a Maxtor 320GB external hard disk. It was working fine on my laptop until I connected it to my new WDTV LIVE PLUS. Now when I coonect it to my laptop, I get an error message telling me that the a file or directory is corrupted and not readable. The system is not recognizing my hard drive any more. Somebody, please help. I have a lot of data on the hard disk and dont want to lose it. Thanks. |

did you properly eject it from the wdtv before removing it? how is it formatted?
I suspect you removed it without ejecting it and something is corrupt.. you can try putting it back on the wdtv and see if you can eject it or try scanning it from your computer, chkdsk or some third party utility.. |

Moved from the Gen. 1 to the Live Plus section, both of which are clearly marked and cannot possibly be confused with each other.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I might have removed without ejecting. I tried CHKDSK G: /f and CHKDSK /f G: but both commands are not working. Could you please recommend a good and trusted third party utility?

Professional data recovery will cost you an arm and a leg. Good programs like GetDataBack or R-Studio do cost $, but might get the job done depending on the extent of damage (physical or to the file system). Unless you used the Live Plus to modify the file system i.e. to move/delete files on the HDD, it sounds like unfortunate coincidence that the drive failed (if indeed it's a physical failure) when connected to the player. Of course, as mentioned above, not ejecting/safely removing the drive can also cause file system corruption, which is why that step is always recommended. A few extra seconds is not worth risking your precious data, right?

I once had to recover a large amount of data from a hard drive that lost it's master boot record. I used UFS Explorer Professional and also Bootmed (free). UFS Explorer seems to be more thorough but is not free.

I am also having issues with my external hard drive getting corrupted after removing from the WDTV Live plus. This all started after a firmware update 1.06.16. The HDD is a Hitachi 500 GB. I either power down the unit or eject it whenever i remove the drive. Windows 7 says the drive is corrupted then scans the drive without finding any errors. I have performed a soft and hard resets and no change. The drive is formatted NTFS. How do I roll back to my previous version that i have backed up.

Check the Tutorials section for rollback instructions. All older FW versions are archived here as well.
