Prerelease download (updated 06/16/2009)
We've received tremendous feedback on WD TV and some great suggestions to improve the product even more. In response to your requests, we're pleased to offer prerelease product enhancements to make your viewing experience better than ever. Updating your media player is simple. Just follow the instructions below, grab your remote and enjoy the show! This is a prerelease version of the firmware. Feel free to install it but be aware this is beta firmware so use it at your own risk. If you are not comfortable with this, please wait for the final version. What's New? Prerelease 1.02.10 (includes all previously released updates) Fixed Items: Greek subtitles now render properly. Previously they rendered slowly, causing them to briefly flash on the screen. Korean subtitles now render properly. Previously they disappeared during video playback. Playlists play in the correct order. Previously they played files in alphabetical order. Added feature: Metadata support for music improved over previous releases. For example, browsing by genre is broken down into artists, then albums, then tracks. Known issues: A few text strings were not translated properly over different UI languages Prerelease 1.02.08 Enhanced cover art, album art, and thumbnail support for media files and folders Additional subtitle languages and decoding support Improved media playback and navigation More audio formats for MKV container Fixed bugs reported by the WD TV user community DOWNLOAD (IMG:http://wdtvhd.com/home_firmware_sub_icon_n.png) How to Install the Product Update: 1. Open the firmware update .ZIP file and extract the two files (.BIN and .VER) to a USB drive's main directory 2. Turn the WD TV on and connect your USB drive 3. Use the remote control to select SETTINGS from the home screen 4. Highlight the firmware upgrade icon, and press ENTER on the remote 5. You will be prompted to perform the firmware upgrade. Select OK and press ENTER. This will restart the system 6. After restarting, the system automatically enters firmware upgrade mode 7. Once the update process is completed, the HD media player will restart again |

If they are improving metadata support for audio files, perhaps they could start introducing proper metadata support for video files.
I encode as mp4 files, and include:
At least the first 2 fields on that list should be indexed and able to browse via. So you can, for example show only Movies -> Action & Adventure, or TV Shows -> Comedy, or Movies -> All. |

Prerelease download (updated 06/16/2009) We've received tremendous feedback on WD TV and some great suggestions to improve the product even more. 1.2.10 now doesn't power down the HDD [remaining rant snipped] Edit: nevermind, after a reset to factory settings (which, oddly enough, does nothing to the firmware), it does. Sorry for the fuss. |

Does this firmware release fix the fast forward/rewind issues on x264 formats? (M4V, MKV)... Or do we have to continue to rename these files to .MP4 for it to work?

Hi guys.. I just got one of these upgrading to .10 beta as we speak..
Someone please tell me how do I timeshift? Is there an option to timeshift to a certain point in time in a movie file? If not then this should be implemented I just gave up my Pioneer DV-410V for this thing and I cannot find timeshift anywhere! |

now that genres go into artist/album, etc How can you shuffle songs within genre? I used to be able to do this when shuffle was set up in settings and going into genres since it was only one level deep, now that it goes beyond just genre, it won't let you shuffle all artists within genre, any ideas?

Hi,
I am currently testing the WD TV to playback MKV test files: video is 1080p VC-1 and audio is AC3 5.1 channels. Some of the test MKV files also contains AC3 stereo tracks as well as the AC3 5.1 track. Connection: WDTV -> HDMI -> Sony Receiver (supports all audio formats, including HD) -> HDMI -> Plasma TV WDTV movie audio setting is set to Digital. Observations: Firmware 1.02.07 1. Some files have jerky video, especially during panning. 2. AC3 5.1 and AC3 stereo audio are present, but sync issues exists. Firmware Pre-Release BETA 1.02.10 1. VC-1 Videos are now silky smooth (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) 2. AC3 stereo tracks can be selected and played, but still has sync issues 3. AC3 5.1 audio track can be selected with the option button during playback, but no sound can be heard. However, exiting the video, and entering the config screen to change the movie audio setting from digital to stereo, allows the AC3 5.1 track to be played, but only in stereo. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) For the next official release, please keep the changes to VC-1 playback, but revert the changes for AC-3 5.1 playback. Please also look at the sync issues. Thanks, and keep up the good work! |

Anyone else find that since getting this firmware that the wdtv recognises your hard drive a lot faster? Before it was 1-2 minutes, now it comes up in 5 seconds!

It's not looking good.
I followed the very easy instructions and edited the wdtv.ver file to change the version to 1.03.00. I then proceeded with performing a normal firmware upgrade. The system found the updated firmware and began the upgrade. It has now been over 20 minutes and it still hasn't ever got back to the normal menu. The unit rebooted and has never came up again with any kind of display. I have been just waiting as I fear I am now the owner of a $100 brick. I figure once I hit reset it has no chance of coming back. EDIT: With no other choice I cycled power on the unit and powered it back up. The unit now appears to be back up and with the previous firmware. I haven't tried any videos yet but feel relieved that I didn't brick the unit. EDIT 2: While I am successfully back to firmware 1.02.07 my video viewing is still terrible. These are the same videos I had before I upgraded to 1.02.10 and pretty much now I have no option of fast fowarding, rewinding, or pausing. If I start the video and don't touch the remote it works fine. I would have thought reverting back would have made it like it was before (it only did this occasionally). I am wondering if I have a faulty unit. I have no compression in my MKV files. I put in my Bluray disc and use MAKEMKV to convert it to MKV. I have the wd hd tv connected via HDMI to my TV and an optical cable going from the WD thru my Sony DTS receiver. I have the WD set to digital. My situation went from somewhat frustrating to almost unusable now (pretty frustrating to not be able to stop, fast forward, rewind, etc). |

Hi tkpittman, Please discuss this problem over in the Tutorials forums found HERE. Thanks for your understanding, just want to keep the house clean. And about "bricking" the wdtv I have yet to see anyone do this so please dont panic. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Hi!
I am currently using firmware version 1.02.07. I then bought this Samsung SE-S048 Portable Slim DVDRW External (USB). I connected it and turned my WD TV and nothing happened, the LED just blinked for a while and the menu did not display anything on USB2. I have a Toshiba portable 120GB disk connected to USB1 and it is the only one seen by my WD TV. I have been reading from several forums outside of this site that it is primarily due to the firmware. Does the prerelease 1.02.10 have an answer for this? Most of my avi, mp4 and even mkv collections are written into DVD's. It's quite a waste not to be able to use them. |
