Should I get an HDTV Live or stick with ps3?, Will hdtv live work better for me than ps3?

Hi, I currently have a ps3 and have used tiversity to stream content from my computer to the tv but have had mixed at best results, some play and work smooth and fine, other dvds or music files created or done in the same manner (same programs same methods) either do not play or don't show up etc, it's almost as if there is no rhyme or reason as to when or if something is going to work.

I saw a video on youtube for the wdtv and it just looked neat, but what I want to do with it 95% of the time is just play my dvd movie collection that has been converted into folders on my external hard drive, I use a program called dvdfab and just save the MAIN MOVIE only (no trailers or menus) so I end up with 2 folders audio and video and inside the video folder on average i end up with 3-5 .vob files.

Will the wdtv play those vob files in the video folder and if so will I have to choose and play each vob from the folder manually or will it be smart enough to play vob 1,2,3,4 all in row for me?

I don't want to have to go thru every single movie and convert, compress, rename anything, currently on ps3 i have to play each vob file manually and again i can play 3 vobs fine then vob 4 will have some issue (very very annoying).

I like the idea of the wdtv LIVE aspect too, but if it won't do my basic vob playback stuff without having me do something to the files folders etc then I guess wdtv might not be for me, just didn't want to go spend $100-150 for a wdtv or wdtv live and then have it not do what I am hoping it can do.

    Thank you for any input,

    FTLOSM

I have the 1st Gen. WD TV, not the Live, but it is able to cycle through files just fine and in the correct order, as long as they're named correctly. I don't know about the Live, but if ever there's an issue with the VOB playing order, all you really need to do is use VOBMerge to join all the VOBs for each movie into a single file. The process is painless and as fast as your HDD can handle. Not a lot of work, but a little, sure. In any case, if you ever get the Live, I'd highly recommend that henceforth you simply rip your DVDs/BRs losslessly into a single MKV file using MakeMKV, that will contain all the DVD's audio/video/subtitle tracks. The files are so much easier to handle that way!

Thanks for the input, sounds like this will do what I want it to or do it with minor modifications (not having to go redo each dvd one by one), will for sure make my movie watching easier tho, so I am going to get one for myself as a late Christmas present to myself.

    Hi FTLOSM,

Ditch the PS3 and grab a WDTV Live you will be so glad you did. I own a PS3 and have used tiversity as well as few other streaming apps that fell very short of what they said they could do. I currently own 2 WDTV Lives and networked them using cat5 cable and have amazing results with streaming. As for playing anything you throw at it, I have never had an issue.

Locally in my area you can grab the WDTV Live right now for 119 CDN which is a steal.

    Cheers!
