Updated to the newest firmware last night. Playon is history. I wish that I had been given warning before. What now? Do I try to roll back? How is that accomplished?

I received an e-mail from PlayOn today telling me that WDTV's firmware version 1.04 breaks PlayOn. They recommend going back to 1.02. The directions are here. You can download version 1.02 from here.

    Hope this helps.

I've spent a good 4 hours googling and screwing with different things trying to get PlayOn to work.
    Thanks, WD!

I bought the WD TV Live media player and a copy of PlayOn, in part because it would enable me to play Netflix over my cable Internet connection.

1: it is unethical and possibly actionable to retract functionality like this via a firmware upgrade. I know you have a newer version of your hardware to sell, with Netflix capability built in, but I protest being coerced into buying new hardware just to retain the functionality I researched and purchased.
2: I do not want to revert firmware versions to a product that is on-line on the Internet. That is inappropriate and dangerous computing practice.

I am one very unhappy customer as of this moment (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/angry.gif)

See the email from PlayOn below:

    Hi David,

I apologize for the trouble you are having with this. Western Digital has released a firmware update to WD Live TVs that seems to breaks the WDTV Live's compatibility with PlayOn. This firmware update has added four new applications (Facebook, Deezer, Flingo, and AccuWeather) and USB keyboard support for the WDTV Live. If these new additions aren't critical to you can go back to an older version.

We recommend submitting a support request to Western Digital to find out more information and to request they fix this bug they introduced in firmware version 1.04. In the meantime, you can install an earlier version by following the instructions found in Western Digital's knowledge base here:

    http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5800

A few customers have recommended WDTV Live firmware version 1.02. 1.02 is available for download from Western Digital's website, here:

    http://download.wdc.com/wdtv/wdtvlive_rollback_1.02.21.zip

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Thank you for contacting PlayOn Support.

    Regards,

    Russ

I can understand your frustration but in all honesty it's doubtful WD or any of it's representatives come here or even know we exist...

as playon told you, go to WD directly, an enthusiasts website cannot - nor will try, to help you.

good luck, please keep us updated, I can only imagine you are one of many in the same situation.

We can only suggest what the PlayOn folks did, i.e. downgrade till WD hopefully fixes this bug. Also, complain to WD and let them know in no uncertain terms that you are not pleased.
