I have read every post, done every tutorial, upgraded/downgraded to every firmware, I am exhausted. I CANNOT get this thing to stream media (other than .wmv) from my Windows 7 Computer. I will be returning the WDTV Live and going with something else. I can't believe WD has such an unbelievable lack of support for what is now Windows mainstream OS. I will never buy anything from WD again because of this piece of junk. Good Luck everyone, hope the frustration doesn't drive you to the looney bin like it has for me.

Which FW do you have installed? If you've browsed the forum, you'd know that the forthcoming release i.e. 1.02.14 will officially add Win7 support. Now it's up to you really. Either you wait and check it out once a stable release is out, and possibly contact WD Support if it doesn't work (since they'll have to officially support it once it's out), or else dump the player.

Yes, As soon as I noticed this beta firmware was out, I installed it on the player, but still had major problems. However, since writing that post, I have actually got it working. I installed Divx for Windows 7 and all of a sudden everything started to fall into place, I can now stream .mkv and .avi, but not video_ts. Not sure if streaming video_ts is even possible, but I don't care as I never use that file type. I am just scared that if my windows machine ever needs to be reformatted that I will never get streaming working again, I tweaked and played around with so many settings that I have no idea which one actually worked. Anyway, as for right now, it is working, and that is all that matters!

you have a Windows 7 issue, not a wdtv live issue.
that is the main reason I have not switched from XP yet.

See, all it required was some patience! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Note that your usage of such devices still qualifies you as something of an early adopter, 'cos most people I know of at least are still using DVD players and the like. So folks like us are bound to have more issues than the ones who'll follow in our footsteps and use more refined products/services (which no doubt we would have helped refine).

    Hi

Take a half a day to rebuild your windows 7 box and just make a new user called "wdlive" with a password and do basic file shares to your media. I was ready to chuck my wd live out as it kept dropping out, kept dropping the network connection etc. I spent the time to rebuild my box using simple file shares, pointed the WD live to them, entered the user name and password and BAM works like magic now. I should have rebuilt weeks ago rather than stuffed around with it. Now I am a very happy wd live user and it works like it should. No issues since a rebuild with simple file shares.

I agree totally. I´ve gone through alot of forum posts here and on other forums while configuring Network Shares and Media Servers and one thing I have concluded is this: WDTV live user manual leaves alot to be desired.

I have now reached a point where I dare say it's working and I am happy with my WDTV live. Fingers crossed! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

    Settings that work for me
I have shared on Vista64 and Windows7, right-click file to share, set sharing permissions for Guest and Everyone to Read/Write,
Changed my workgroup name to WORKGROUP.
Vista64 and Win7 are both on wireless internet
    Windows Firewall is enabled
WDTV LIVE is wired Ethernet from an EPlug (carries LAN through house electric circuits to outlets)
    Using the latest Official firmware.
My Videos are a MKV, MP4, AVI and ISO
Router is USROBOTICS MAXG WITH USB FOR PRINTER
I can see all machines device from any of them. Router ses WDTV LIVE too.
    ISP gives a dynamic IP.
WDTV LIVE automatically modifies it IP as needed.

Hope this help someone not to give up.
