    Hello everyone,

new here, as you can see... i did some searching and i cant seen to find anything that is like my issue and its baffling me...

Ok, so i have the WD HD TV ver1, got it in Dec 09, with whatever firmware it came with... the other day i upgraded the firmware to 1.03 and NONE of my audio was working via surround 5.1 only 2 channels... (btw i am using HDMI cables for audio and video)

so i downgraded the firmware to 1.02.07 and now this odd issue is going on

playing a mp4 (while audio was set to digital) wouldnt play ANY audio but shows on my surround as 5.1... if i switched the audio to stereo, it would only play 2 channel (even tho its 5.1)

now if i play a mkv file in stereo it only plays 2 channel, and if i change it to digital audio is plays it on 5.1...

so essentially i have to change the audio output every time depending on the file....

anyone got any ideas?! i hope all that made sense...

You can't use HDMI for 5.1 audio with the WDTV, you'll have to use the Toslink connector to get surround sound.

    the toslink?

i get surround perfectly fine when its on digital and playing a mkv... its only on mp4 i wont get surround (event ho the file is surround) so i need the optical link to get surround sound for mp4s? am i assuming that correct?

Yes, I'm pretty sure that it can't output any surround at all via HDMI. Anyway how do you connect everything? HDMI to receiver and then HDMI to your TV from your receiver?

Correct... its a Sony Surround sound system... goes media box HDMI to Sony Surround sound then HDMI to TV... like is said my surround works fine with HDMI cables and playing a mkv

Can you run MediaInfo on the MP4s and MKVs and check the audio codecs used? You're comparing the two, but remember that the audio codecs used might be entirely different, and it's possible your receiver cannot handle the different codecs in the same manner.

It could also be that this is nothing but the old well-known problem with MP4s and AAC 5.1/6-channel audio on the Gen. 1. The easiest solution might be to convert the MP4s losslessly to MKVs using MKVMerge GUI (part of the mkvtoolnix package).

See this topic for more: http://wdtvhd.com/index.php?showtopic=11172

If using the latest mkvtoolnix release, be sure to override the default header removal compression settings for each track you want to keep. In MKVMerge GUI, you need to select each audio track in turn (in the middle pane). Then click on "Extra Options" and set "Compression" to "None". Do NOT leave it blank, as that is not the same as "None".

An alternate solution if you want to retain your MP4s, is to demux the audio stream, downsample from 48 kHz to 44.1 kHz and remux again. I cannot vouch for this personally, but see here for a user's testimonial that WD Support recommended this solution to him: http://wdtvhd.com/index.php?showtopic=15650

Also, kindly remember to search and browse through the forum a bit next time before starting a new thread.

Are you sure? It worked for PDW's brother too, as well as others mentioned here: http://wdtvhd.com/index.php?showtopic=6126...&#entry7922
