hi, got myself a (what i found out to be) a 1st gen wdtv off ebay for my kids to watch there movies on, was so impressed decided to buy a new one for myself, got a new 2nd gen one only to find out that the files that played perfectly on the 1st gen one, won't (apart from half a dozen) play on the 2nd gen one, nothing fancy with the files, they are just plain old h.264 files i ripped from my own collection using my mac book, a few mkv files i have downloaded play ok, but that is only about 2% of my collection, any help would be appreciated (in case i can't work it out my self)

    cheers

What error do you get? Which firmware version does the Gen. 2 have? Tried updating it? Also try the reset button and see if that helps. Are you using the same connections for both players?

the error was along the lines of 'will not play file refer to manual for accepted files' the gen 2 has the latest firmware, same connections, i just unplug the wd passport which has all my movies on from the the 1st gen and plug it into the 2nd gen and nada, i tried converting a film which wouldn't play on the 2nd gen one to another format (still an mp4 file and it worked) but i really can not be bothered to convert all my files as it will take ages, some (very few) files did play on the 2nd gen, i looked at these and the ones which didn't play and there was no difference, same codex and everything, sent the 2nd gen back to amazon this morning, will continue will the 1st gen for the kids, might try and get hold of a 1st gen for myself, or will just continue with my mac mini. cheers anyways
