    @BusterB: I wonder what that "pre-standard" Microsoft video codec used is exactly? Anyway, I'm sure if you re-encode it using Xvid or DivX, it will play. Use the Arcsoft converter app that came with the player first, else you can try other apps such as SUPER, AutoGK etc.

    I already mentioned two perfectly good alternatives to Arcsoft. Did you try those?

    The solution is really not that complex
    Download mkvmerge and install it.
    run the mkvmerge GUI or mmg from the mkvtoolnix foler

    ADD the stripped MKV file
    select the vtrack extra then optionsthen compression none
    do that for the atrack(s) also and bob's your uncle
    it will save the file with a (1) added on to it.
    It only takes a couple of minutes to run.

    Mediainfo will show headerstripping in its display so you can precheck any mkv before you stick it in the WD and freeze it up

    These are both free programs so you really have no reason not to use them.

    @brock: Who are you replying to? If BusterB, you must have missed the fact that he's having problems with AVIs, not MKVs. As for removing header compression, that's been mentioned on the first page of this thread more than once, and there's also a very nice tutorial with screenshots in the Tutorials section of this forum.

    Thanks for that, I must admit I missed the last two suggestions. I downloaded the trial version of Arcsoft and converter the .avi version to a playable mkv version instead, although only in stereo - the original avi must have been only two channel..

    I recommend you install or use the portable version of MediaInfo to check all your problem files. It's the best program of its kind I've seen so far.

    Only for the record: since today I cannot playback ANY video files on my WD TV 1st gen. Pretty annoying. No reset helped so far. I will try a FW downgrade now, hope it works...

    Thats just ridiclious. Yesterday I was able to watch a HD mkv-movie without any problems, today the WD TV doesn't play anything, no AVI, no nothing. I cant believe it. FW downgrade didnt work. I guess WD wants to force me to buy a new media player. Any suggestions? Thanks!

    Nothing? No video, any format? No audio? Might be a hardware issue...

    You can try switching cables etc. to rule out other possible problem points.

    No audio, no video. Haven't tried photos thou... Screen is always black, via return button I can go back to the media menu. Thats it. Maybe it is a hardware issue but then it happend overnight, all of a sudden. Very strange. Down- and upgrade of FW brought no results. Looked after the cables already but if I can see the HD TV menu and all it shouldn't be the connection...

    Even though custom FW has no connection whatsoever to media playback, since you've tried different versions of official FW, you might as well give WDLXTV a shot. Use the hard reset button once immediately before flashing, and once after. Also, delete the .WD_TV folder on your USB drive with the media and then try playing with the new FW installed.

    You're my hero! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) Video playback is working again. Couldn't try HD content yet but I guess everything will be fine. Thank you very much for your quick support. One last question: I used to cut of HD TV from power supply after I used it. I figured it heated up a little even when I switched it off with the remote. Do you recommend to have it connected with power all the time? Might this have been part of my problem?

    Maybe, not sure. Personally, if I'm not gonna watch anything for a long time, I always safely eject any connected drives (highly recommended for data safety!) and then pull the plug or switch off the player at the power strip. Excess heat can certainly kill it, and the drive could also be damaged if it doesn't spin down and turn off completely.

    Damn, the problem is back. And now even changing the firmware doesn't help. Very annoying. I can't play any content except pictures. Changed the FW now three or four times and nothing happend. On replay I get only a blank black screen. It seems WD really wants me to buy a new player...

    Any suggestions anyone? Thats really frustrating, the player just doesnt work anymore. Only picture playback. Changed the firmware now half a dozen times...

    You've re-flashed multiple times with official and custom FW? I guess you must have also tried different files from different USB drives after soft/hard resetting the player, as also pulling the power cord and re-plugging after a while. If so, I don't know what else there is to try. Maybe the player is a write-off after all... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

    Youre right, I tried everything that came to my mind. The thing is: sometimes the player works (like vesterday and today), sometimes it doesnt. I cant really figure out what the problem may be. At first I thought it was a problem with one of my HDs but then again it worked. Strange thing, I just hope it will work more often in the future than it fails...

    I just recently got a Gen 1 on craigslist for $30.00.

    If anyone is still having this problem, I am using tsMuxer and tsMuxer converts quickly to ts or M2ts, then they are playing fine.

    Know it sucks to have another step when a FW update would fix this, but do not think that will happen. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)
