I've had 4 of these players for years now, love them. But how come on most HD files (not every single one, just most) the audio will not get to the tv via hdmi. Files I have that are not HD that came from DVD will almost all work.
I'd like to get a couple more as xmas gifts, but not everyone on my list has a surround sound, they would just want to use it to play movies through the plain ole tv speakers.

DTS audio decoding is not supported by the Gen. 1, only by the Gen. 2 and newer models. Moreover, if you want multi-channel sound, you'll need to connect to an external receiver, just like for DTS. For non-DTS supported audio codecs (see manual for complete list), you can have stereo audio if you set the audio output under Settings to Stereo instead of Digital (the latter is to be used when you connect to an external receiver via HDMI, TOSLink/optical etc.)

    ok.
So for xmas gifts only, would a V2, live or live plus allow basic 2 channel audio to the tv via hdmi on most all HD files? I have a very nice Yamaha digital receiver on the front end of my movie room, so I'm fine, I'm just wondering for friends/family that just would use it as a basic movie player on a living room tv.

In a nutshell, I want to give a couple WDTV players and HDD's loaded with files for xmas, and not have to worry about people saying they can't hear anything.

Yeah, any of the models except the Mini and Gen. 1 should have no problems with stereo output on most files (caveat: as long as they use supported containers/codecs of course).
