So I bought a WD TV LIVE PLUS and returned my Apple TV because it was a PITA to convert to MP4.

On the apple TV, the netflix stuff streamed perfectly with the right proportions and no black bars.

I have since installed the WD TV, watched the same TV episode (Dexter Season 2 episode 3) and now the picture is disproportionate and has black bars on the top and bottom.

Is there a way to fix the aspect ratio to bring back the proportion and eliminate the black bars?

At that point my conclusion was that the signal from Netflix was originally feeding 4:3 with a 16:9 picture using black bars at the top and bottom to fill the 4:3 area.

Sounds like a pretty safe assumption. You try restarting the WDTV yet? Does it do this for all your Netflix shows (sometimes Netflix doesn't get the video right)?

Yeah I tried restarting. This throws me off becausey apple tv streams the Netflix video in precisely 16:9 1280x720 for the same exact video

Will any of the custom firmwares for wdtv allow me to change scaling, crop, and aspect ratio to my parameters that I specify?
