So I bought a WD TV LIVE PLUS and returned my Apple TV because it was a PITA to convert to MP4.

On the apple TV, the netflix stuff streamed perfectly with the right proportions and no black bars.

I have since installed the WD TV, watched the same TV episode (Dexter Season 2 episode 3) and now the picture is disproportionate and has black bars on the top and bottom.

Is there a way to fix the aspect ratio to bring back the proportion and eliminate the black bars?

Will any of the custom firmwares for wdtv allow me to change scaling, crop, and aspect ratio to my parameters that I specify?

I don't believe so. Have you tried using some of the other WDTV aspects (like 720p instead of 1080p) to see if that works? Are you using the latest firmware? Jut throwing out questions that might help you through this....
