It seems that when I use random audio playback (using library and hand crafted playlist) the tracks are strictly limited to a couple of hundred either side of my start point. This is extremely annoying as it severly limits the music to which I can listen.

This never used to be the case and posts on other forums suggest it is a fireware issue.

    Anyone else getting this?

Rolled back the firmware to 1.03.49V and everything is now sorted.

Have to say that WD would do better to get the basics sorted on this box rather than devoting a lot of effort on fluff.

Couldn't agree with you more. 1.03.49 seems to perform better in terms of video playback as well, as many have reported. Honestly, who buys these things for Facebook and so on? The primary use is to play back media, but WD seems to be incapable of fixing the many existing bugs. They can add whatever they want, as long as the basic functionality is down pat.
