Occasionally, the WDTV Live with a USB drive attached turns off immediately after it is powered up. If the USB drive is unplugged, the unit stays on when powered up, and then I can then plug in the drive in successfully. Another work around is to unplug the power cord, and when it is plugged in again it powers up correctly with the USB drive attached. After experiencing this this the color of the display has on occasion turned from the default blue to a greenish color. Is this a power brick problem?

what kind of USB drive? a USB bus powered hard drive? if so, you are going to kill your media player.
it's drawing to much power to start the player and spin up the drive I'd say. but, without all the pertinent info, I am just guessing.. |

Oh, I am a good loyal WD user and am using an 80GB Passport drive, which is the drive I have been using w/o problems for over a year. But do you mean to say the WDTV Live is NOT designed to power ANY hard drive through the USB port? That is certainly the way it seems that the Passport drives have been advertised. Yes, I know you can get a splitter USB cable, but am I then supposed to buy a brick that is compatible with a USB cable? Every other portable hard drive I have is in a case that has a standard round 5v input receptacle! Or am I supposed to use the two USB ports on the WDTV, which are inconveniently located to make that work (but can be done)? I thought of that, but figured it might be that the power brick is failing. Please shed some light on this issue if possible.

I've heard to many reports of people running into exactly what you are describing, then the WDTV just refuses to power on at all..
yes, it does work but I doubt it can provide the current required over a long period of time, seeing how small the power adapter is for these devices I just think it's a bad idea to use a bus powered drive, now it's just stupid why WD removed USB hub support, a good powered USB hub would be ideal to power these drives.. |
