       Audio out of sync with AC3 via optical out in mkv HD material, audio 200 ms ahead of video (mainly for 24p framerate)

    Has anyone noticed that when you use the optical out (Toslink), and don't use the audio to stereo downmix, but digital 5.1 AC3, that audio is ahead of the video for as much as 200 ms. It is very annoying and especially noticeable on HD content with 24 fps (I have 720p24, compressed blu-ray files). The problem is less when you choose 1080p60 output instead, but I need that framerate as it is THE blu-ray most used fps, and the WDTV Live video is flawless for 1080p23.976. Now the audio isn't.. This was no issue on the old WDTV..

    For DTS the problem also exists, but is less obvious

    For standard resolution material the problem won't be noticed often, since it is never in 24 fps format, but usually 29.97 or 25 fps. I've played PAL DVD's with screen resolution 720p50 and that was ok.

    So..no digital out until this is fixed.. or use the old WDTV with an USB disk :-(

    I've noticed this too - though my experience with mkv files is limited as I have only made one to test on.

    OK Y'all.Hello! I've noticed the same thing with the optical and analog leading the HDMI audio by about 200ms.
    I HAVE A FIX!!! Well, a dirty fix anyway.

    I have a samsung 7000 series LED Tv. I set the WDTV output to Digital, so the audio comes out of the TV via HDMI. The TV has the ability to route the HDMI AC3 audio bitstream from the TVs optical output to my amp, and the audio is in sync with a slight delay (just noticable if you have the tv audio and amp on at the same time).

    On the whole, a very successful way to do it. WORKS PERFECT AT 24fps too!

    i have to say that is an interesting workaround...i have noticed that on compressed mkvs that there can be a delay...but ive seen it go away as the movie goes on also...i might have to try that method using the hdmi->tv->toslink->receiver...seems kind of ridiculous though...lol


    EDIT UPDATE: i tried the method of the OP and it worked! everything was in perfect sync...dont know if it will with DTS also...but that would be a limitation of my TV's optical...not the player as DTS works fine already.

    i've opened a query with WD and was told that "High @L5.1 is not supported, you need to reencode"

    This sounds like BS to me, as the audio is spot on via HDMI, and via the optical on my tv.

    Hi, I have the exact same problem, audio out of synch on hd mkv's using optical.

    I have tried jags workaround, and I must say it does fixes the problem with AC3 files!
    But now the problem I have is that I receive no audio at all when it is in DTS.
    Could it be that my TV cannot decode DTS? How could I fix that?
    It really bugs me out, one issue is fixed and I get a new one (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mellow.gif)

    Yep, I have the same problem with DTS. My tv Sammy ue46b7020 LED doesn't support DTS, either in playing it, or passthrough, so i have no choice to convert DTS to AC3 (the reason I bought a sodding WDTV was so i wouldn't have to convert the audio).
