are you running custom or WD firmware on it? does it recognize any USB device plugged in? have you played media from a USB device? is the USB light on in the front of the wdtv when a USB device is installed? does it flash for a bit after a USB device is inserted?

try formatting your usb thumb drive FAT32, quick format, then extract the files onto it again.
disconnect power from the wdtv, insert the thumb drive, re-apply power.
this should put it in upgrade mode automatically. unless it's already at 1.03.01 firmware in which case it will ignore any other firmware unless you edit the wdtv.ver file in notepad or wordpad.

I forgot to mantion that I tried all advice from this forum, including reformating my both usb devices with FAT32 (quick format also), and including re-apply power method (so sofisticated like we are in the rock period).
Also I tried to change ver file, but nothing.
Firmware version is (from settings menu) 1.01.70 and I want to aplly 1.03.01, i thought it is greater version than my player have.

So i dont know what to do else?

are the firmware files in a folder?

both files should be on the usb device, no folders, no other files, just the 2 files in the archive.

    wdtv.bin
    wdtv.ver

that's all that should be there, again, no folders at all.

Tunas, you have the same post in the WDTV Firmware section. I answered that post with the following..

"Have you tried a hard reset?
Use a paperclip in the hole in the rear, hold it in until the lights flash (about 20-30 seconds).
Then see if you get the menu without any thing plugged into the USB ports."

    Now, questions to answer....

Does your player work at all??

Do you see the normal screens?

Did you make sure the flash drive you used with 1.03.01 is set up as Rev Drew told you, that is:

If you have a version of firmware below 1.03.01 it should be seen by the player at start up and ask you if you want to upgrade.

Check the things above and reply back.

Also having this problem. And running 1.02.11. Trying to upgrade to the newest fw. I am using a 1GB Flashdrive formatted as FAT32 (have also tried mac extended). On the flashdrive there is nothing other than the 2 files, which arent in the folder. I have tried doing a hard-reset, and have tried unplugging the WD's power, plugging in FD, plugging in power, and still no go. I've also done a system reset from the system menu. When I get to the main screen i click on the folders icon under movies, and i just get a "folder is empty" message, and it goes right back to the main screen. I have Multiple 1 TB hard-drives that I have been using with the WD, and they have all worked fine, no glitches except for "storage cannot aggregate" on start-up but I can just click OK, and it will read the hard-drive just fine. (no hubs for the HDs, can only be able to have 2 plugged in at a time). Have never used custom fw, or done any homebrew.

Update: I've change the .ver file to 1.03.02 and 1.04.1 and still nothing. Any ideas?

    Hello,

I too am having troubles with upgrading firmware. I never get the upgrade icon.

I bought this unit new about 1 month or so ago.
It works great. I Decided to upgrade from 1.01.70 to 1.03.01
    I have tried the following:
    3 different flash drives. 256meg, 1gig, 4gig
Downloaded the firmware code at least five times on two different computers
Extracted the files Using winrar & Alzip to the root of the keys.
I have verified that they are the only two files on the keys.
    Fat32 & NTFS
Reformating the USB keys (curently fat32)
    Power reset of wdtv
Hard reset using reset button (Just returned to main screen)
Have never used any other firmware. (In fact this is the first time I've tried the upgrade)
Have verified that the 1gig & 4gig usb keys can be seen if I want to watch a video from them.
Have tried to do the firmware upgrade from either of the two usb ports. (Nothing else plugged in)
I haved even tried editing the file to make it think that the version will be 1.04.01 even though i shouldn't have to.

Any other help would be appreciated.
    thank you.

    Don

Don, all I can say is, try some more pen drive makes/models. I used a Kingston DataTraveler 8GB and it worked for me, when others didn't. YMMV of course.

It's probably a bit late to be psoting, but I had a similar problem and I just thought I'd offer my solution.

When I went to sleep last night the WD was working fine. When I started it up today, it seemed to be working fine, all the menus were working, but it would not play any videos. When I selected one, it would just go to black screen like it was going to begin, but then nothing. AVI, MKV, VOB, WMV, nothing played.

I had occasionally experienced a similar problem where it would not play a movie, but it report that it could not play the video, and a hard power off/on always fixed that. Today, however, it didn't.

I read all the solutions offered in this thread and a few others, but none of them seemed to work. There were so many combinations of things to try! I was already running on 1.03.01, so I learned that I would have to edit the wdtv.ver.

I won't go on and on about what DIDN'T work, only to say the solution was really quite simple: I edited the ver file to 1.04.01, and used USB2 instead of USB1. Voila! I powered up and said it detected new firmware to be loaded, and offered me a folder icon with a down arrow to click. Firmware reflashing was successful and it fixed the playback problem.

Thanks for all the suggestions I read in this forum.

    David
